SELECT BASEBALL

In addition to playing on an ETBA House League team, players who love the game and are ready to take on an additional challenge may also try out to make an ETBA Select Team - to represent our association at a more competitive level through weekly league play and tournaments.

Select Teams are designed for players who demonstrate strong baseball skills, a growing understanding of the game, and a dedication to develop further by committing additional time, working closely with like-minded teammates, and competing at a higher level against similar competition.

Options

ETBA typically has a Select Team (dependent on interest) in the 8U, 9U, 10U (playing in 11U division), 11U, 12U (playing in 13U division), 13U, 14U (playing in 15U division), 15U and 18U divisions. All ETBA Select Teams are known as the Dodgers. Our Select Teams play in the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) East loop on Sunday nights. In addition to the Sunday loop games, our Select teams have the opportunity to participate in weekend tournaments across Ontario. Select baseball requires earlier and more extensive planning by the League, the coaches and managers, and it requires commitment by the players to their team and the season

Tryouts

Tryouts can take place as early as September of the previous playing year, or as late as May of the current playing year. Tryout dates and times are posted on the ETBA Instagram page. All players can try out for their corresponding age group’s Select Team. Players must be registered in an ETBA House League program to be accepted on a Select Team.

Time Commitment

There is typically off-season training and team activities. In-season, in addition to the House League games (one to two house league games per week), and the Sunday night TBA East loop games, there will likely be weekly practices and a few weekend tournaments, including the TBA East Playoffs (August) and Labour Day Provincials, if the team qualifies. This can all add up to approximately 15 to 20 total games per season.

Cost

In addition to the House League fee, there is an extra Select Team fee per player to cover the costs of Select play (e.g. league fee, uniforms, umpire and tournament fees, etc.). The Select Fees are set by each Select Team and may vary from team to team and from year to year depending on the costs involved. ETBA works hard to keep Select baseball accessible while delivering a high-quality experience.

Select League Play

ETBA Dodgers play in the Toronto Baseball Association (TBA) East loop on Sunday nights. Games generally start at 6:30 p.m. but could start earlier if a double-header is being played. Players are also expected to attend practices arranged by their coach.

Tournaments

Your team Select play Fees will include participation in weekend tournaments, which may vary by team. In addition, there will be the TBA East playoffs in August, and the Labour Day Provincials if the team qualifies.

Travel

Some travel is part of the Select Baseball experience. The Sunday night loop games are played in the Toronto area, at parks such as Wishing Well Park (Victoria Park/401), Howard Talbot Park (Bayview/Eglington), Bond Park (Leslie/Lawrence), Heron Park (Morningside/Lawrence), and Stan Wadlow Park (Woodbine/Cosburn). Weekend tournaments take place in various parts of Ontario. Travel offers families a chance to build friendships and enjoy memorable summer weekends together.

If your player is excited to grow their skills and embrace a rewarding challenge, Select Baseball may be a great fit for your family.
